With Nexi Smart PA, it will be possible to pay pagoPA notices at hundreds of thousands of stores across ItalyNexi is expanding access to pagoPA payments across Italy’s retail network. Starting this summer, merchants equipped with Nexi SmartPOS will be able to download Nexi Smart PA free of charge — the new app developed by the PayTech to accept payments for healthcare tickets, school fees, utility bills, fines, administrative charges and all other pagoPA notices directly in store.
Through Nexi Smart PA, the pagoPA acceptance network will be extended to hundreds of thousands of retail locations nationwide, delivering immediate benefits for both citizens and merchants. Consumers will gain access to a significantly broader physical network to pay their pagoPA notices, enjoying greater freedom of choice and a payment experience aligned with their everyday habits. Retailers will be able to offer a value-added service to their customers while increasing in-store traffic.
“Transactions on pagoPA have grown from approximately 45 million in 2019 to around 450 million in 2025, with an increase of over 6% in the last year alone, demonstrating how this infrastructure is becoming increasingly central for citizens - said Roberto Catanzaro, Chief Business Officer, Merchant Solutions, Nexi Group - As a system player, Nexi has always been committed to making payments to the Public Administration simpler, more accessible and more widespread. Smart PA is part of this journey, complementing the many solutions we have already developed to facilitate the adoption of digital payments to the PA and to support the country’s digitalisation”.
Nexi Smart PA further strengthens the range of services the PayTech has introduced in recent years across both physical and online channels. According to Nexi estimates, physical channels account for approximately 55% of pagoPA transactions, while online channels represent the remaining 45%.
“Recently, we enabled the payment of pagoPA notices at the checkout counters of around 3,000 retail locations across various large-scale retail and fuel distribution brands, and made healthcare ticket payments available in more than 1,000 pharmacies across Italy - Catanzaro added - We have also enabled Public Administration offices to collect payments by connecting 750 self-service totems and nearly 8,500 POS terminals, and we have already begun installing an additional 600 POS devices to allow several public service operators to collect utility bill payments locally”.
Nexi also plays a central role in online channels, particularly as the Payment Service Provider for card payments on pagoPA’s proprietary channels. In addition, it enables all citizens to pay pagoPA notices via its website and allows Nexi cardholders to settle them directly through the Nexi Pay app.
“The centrality of our role in the evolution of the pagoPA ecosystem is also reflected in our technology platform, which for several years has enabled public bodies and public service operators to connect to the pagoPA system - Catanzaro concluded - We will continue to invest in technology and work on new agreements and solutions with the aim of further supporting the growth of pagoPA transactions, which – driven by the introduction of new taxes and new use cases – we estimate will exceed 600 million by 2030”
